Professor Win Rampen, FREng CEng FIMechE FRSA

 

 

Professor Win Rampen was a founder and Managing Director of Artemis Intelligent Power which has pioneered the development of ultra-efficient and controllable Digital Displacement® hydraulic technology. Since its creation in 1994, as a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh, Win has overseen the growth of Artemis to 50 employees.

Win grew up on a farm near Toronto before training as an engineer. After graduation, he came to the UK in 1978 to work with the wave power team at the University of Edinburgh led by Professor Stephen Salter. It was there that he first encountered Robert Clerk and his hydraulic pump – which was intended for the Salter Duck’s power take-off system. Robert formed a small group, of which Win was part, which designed and built a radical hydraulic machine of unheard-of power density and efficiency.

After a few years of lecturing at Ryerson University in Canada, Win returned to the University to continue working on the advanced hydraulic machines that had arisen from Robert and Stephen’s earlier work. These were applicable not only to waves but, also, other forms of renewable energy and conventional vehicle transmissions. Win led the project at the University and developed the early prototypes. That work led to a doctorate in 1993 and the creation of Artemis in 1994. Artemis grew organically until it was acquired by Mitsubishi in 2010.

Win holds the Chair of Energy Storage at the University of Edinburgh and is a Fellow of the RSA, the I Mech E and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He divides his time between the University and Artemis, where he retains a part-time management role as well as being Chairman.

Artemis Intelligent Power won the 2015 MacRobert Award, UK’s Premier engineering prize.

John Andrew Peacock, FRS, FRSE

 

 

John Andrew Peacock, FRS, FRSE is a British cosmologist, astronomer, and academic. He has been Professor of Cosmology at the University of Edinburgh since 1998, and was Head of the University’s Institute for Astronomy between 2007 & 2013. He is widely known for his research on the formation of structure in the cosmological distribution of matter, and has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles. He is also the author of Cosmological Physics (1999), which has become a standard graduate-level textbook in the subject. He has twice been listed as a Thomson-Reuters ‘highly cited researcher’ − the top 1% of academics worldwide. He was joint winner of the 2014 Shaw Prize, widely seen as the East’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

John Andrew Peacock, FRS, FRSE is a British cosmologist, astronomer, and academic.
